There are many hitchhikers in the Hospitality Club. Several reasons for this: the hitchhiking community was quick to embrace the internet as a tool to exchange accommodation with likeminded people on their travels. The Hitchhiker's Accommodation Base, founded by Vladas Sapranavicius and Augustas Kligys from Lithuania and programmed by Bernd Wechner from Australia, was the first well developed database-driven hospitality exchange site on the net. The Hospitality Club was based in part on this pioneer work.
Hospitality Club founder Veit Kühne is an avid hitchhiker himself, very active in the hitching community, especially in Germany. So it was quite natural that the idea of the club spread quickly to many hitchers on the net.
Hitchhikers are usually a very friendly bunch, open to meeting new people and tolerant of many different opinions they hear from their drivers. They don't require a lot of comfort. But also, they usually can't predict their exact time of arrival, so in a hospitality exchange organization, it is a challenge to communicate well and respect the expectations of the host. It surely helps when the hosts are hitchhikers themselves.
To all you hitchers out there -
come onboard ! Through our search function you will quickly find other hitchers in the club, and can then contact them to stay with them and to share some of your stories from the road when you get to their place!
