Dear friends,
one-and-a-half years since I last sent out a big message - I
spent one year hitchhiking from Argentina to Mexico, wrote my
thesis in Dresden and am now off to a huge project again which
will take me around the world for maybe three years...
You receive this message, because you found your way into my
address book. Every half year or so I send out a long (and I mean
loooong) message to all the people I know to tell a bit about the
things that are going on in my life. I have done this in the six
years I have been on the net and have found it to be a great way
to let people know I am alive and kicking every now and then.

1. New project: bringing-people-together.net
Two weeks ago I started the biggest project of my lifetime yet. I
will hitchhike around the world and not stop until I have found
one million members for The Hospitality Club. I will try many different
things - go to radios, TV, newspapers, talk to mayors, governors,
ministers, people in pubs and on the street. I want to fascinate as many
people as possible with the wonderful idea of hospitality exchange -
that by meeting and helping people coming to your town/country you will
indeed broaden your horizon and do something for intercultural
understanding, besides having fun, of course...:-)
I will set specific goals for every place I go, for example I will not
leave Dresden until I have found 10 members here (managed to do so
already), my home state of Saxony until there are 100 and Germany until
there are 1,000 members. I hope to find 10,000 members in Europe pretty
fast, 100,000 within one year and 1,000,000 in three years. Long way to
go and I need a lot of help! If you know people interested in traveling
and meeting people from other cultures, please just forward them this
message or drop them a line about the club.
During the voyage I will write travel stories about interesting people,
places and organizations. There are two mailing lists. One for regular
short messages from the road, you can subscribe by sending a blank
message to bringing-people-together-subscribe@yahoogroups.com The
other list is the one I have had running since my year in Latin America
where I will send longer travel stories every week or two - blank email
to veit-subscribe@yahoogroups.com and you will travel with me. Of course

The project has started really well here in Dresden - I was on the top
news of a radio station all day on starting Monday July 15, a couple of
newspaper articles have been published already and there was a great
report on the state-wide TV newsshow, for which we did a fun
4-hour-filming session here at my grandparents' and in Dresden last
week. Quite a few people have signed up, but I will need lots and lots
of help to reach the million. So once again - please just drop your
friends a short message, add a link to your signature or forward this
email - every new member counts!
Where will I go? I am not sure yet. First, I want to use the wonderful
European summer and travel around this great continent. I want to visit
many friends I have not seen in a long time, but also stay with people
who invite me through the website or members of the club. Once I have
found 10,000 members in Europe I might plan other voyages - I would love
to travel overland to Asia, maybe spend some time in the Middle East and
learn Arabic, maybe go to the U.S. and Canada to do a long hitchhiking
expedition there, or maybe also travel through Africa. It all depends on
the progress of the project - I have saved a bit of money while
studying, but it would be great to find sponsors who will help me to
keep going until I have accomplished this dream of building a world wide
web of friendly people.
2. The Hospitality Club http://www.hospitalityclub.org
So much text about bringing people together, building a world wide web
of friendly people - if you are asking yourself, so what is this
Hospitality Club? then just read on...
You register and tell how you could help someone coming to your town or
country. With a meal, a tour around town, a place to sleep for the
night, anything you can think of. Once you are a member of the club
(which is free of course), you receive a user name and a password. Then
you can log onto the site and look at the profiles of all other members.
When you go on your next trip, you can just check if there is a member
in the place you are going to, send him/her an email and maybe you
already have a friend at the other end of the world.
The response to the idea has been overwhelming, there are now 1400
members in 84 countries. With the bringing-people-together.net project I
want to accomplish something no other hospitality exchange organization
has managed to do before: make the fascinating concept of hospitality
exchange known in the world and a real travel option for many people who
would otherwise simply have stayed in a hostel and followed their
guidebook around town or who would not have traveled at all. The
Hospitality Club is organized as a volunteer activity - our goal is to
bring people together, and thus foster intercultural understanding.

3. One year in Latin America http://group.veitkuehne.de
When I sent out the last one of these big messages in February 2001 I
was just getting ready to jump on a plane to fly to Buenos Aires,
Argentina. If you have followed the voyage on my travel story list
(http://group.veitkuehne.de), you know of some of the things that have
happened since then, if not, then here's an attempted (short?) summary
of an epic year on the road that really can't be summarized...:
Already in the plane I met the group of AFSers that was to begin an
exchange year in Argentina, so once landed in Buenos Aires, I went
straight to their orientation camp as a volunteer for AFS Argentina.
After a week in Buenos Aires where I caught a glimpse of Maradona at a
Boca game and a stop at Argentina's most famous carneval in Gualeguaychu
I spent a few days in Uruguay, visiting Rossina, a good AFS friend of my
brother Kay and now wife of national soccer player Gonzalo Sorondo who
played very well at the World Cup in Japan/South Corea.

Back in Buenos Aires my first appearance on the radio with The
Hospitality Club, exciting. There were a lot more articles and talks in
the months to follow, so now there are already quite a few members in
Latin America. And it was fun for me.

I hitchhiked the entire year, the only places where this was not
possible were the Andes of Bolivia and Peru. I can tell you about all
the countries now, differences between Argentina (pretty hard) and Chile
(great!), many, many unbelievable stories, read some of them on the
list...
Also, I visited many, many AFS friends and volunteers during this year
and I can't mention all of them here. It was quite amazing to see the
network we have built up within my family in the 8 years since I left
for my year in the U.S. Many wonderful people in a wonderful
organization. In some parts where I did not have any contacts like in
the South of Argentina and in Nicaragua I also used the tent and stayed
in a few hostels in Bolivia and Guatemala.
Traveling South in Argentina the most memorable stay was near El Bolson
on the farm of El Cuba, a German who left here after Chernobyl and lives
with his wife, daughters and three cows. I only ended up there, because
I had met the brother of his "right hand" in Morocco, who had drawn a
map how to get to the farm, but now you really should read the story...

I saw beautiful national parks, Orcas and an otherworldly glacier,
before a bad accident threw me out of my happy travel trails. We crashed
on a gravel road in the middle of nowhere, my backpack flew 50 meters
and the seatbelt saved my life. I only broke my arm and after getting to
the hospital 140 kilometers away after a few hours I continued my voyage
with a cast...

Saw the Southernmost City of the World, Ushuaia on Tierra del Fuego
before heading North for the rest of the year. Into Chile and onto the
gorgeous Camino Austral, where I celebrated my 23rd birthday at a
Hanging Glacier, watching 2 Japanese meeting in the middle of nowhere (I
know, I know, but there were many middle of nowhere's I found myself at
during this year - great for thinking and wondering about the importance
of our existance on this planet), ah yes, and the celebration continued
getting stuck in a cow auction place with an American and asking for
water at the house of a big Pinochet-fan before being rescued by Isralis
the next day...

Then I traveled the length of Chile, staying with so many wonderful AFS
friends that my heart aches just thinking about them. I have fallen in
love with Chile's landscapes and it's people - the one place I will
definitely go back to. On the way I picked up Maria, a cute Swedish
doctor and we spent 6 weeks traveling together, before she had to fly
back home. So many memories of Chile - 5 kids on Chiloe, relaxing in
Temuco, los Rodriguez in Santiago, starting to believe in UFOs,
hitchhiking through the desert with Maria, staying in ghost towns,
feeling a small earthquake. Three months were not enough.

Back to Argentina to see the North, visiting my sister Constanze's host
family in Salta and a very hard hitchhiking expedition to Bolivia. Then
across the Chaco to Resistencia/Corrientes and after a short excursion
to Rosario on to see the magnificent Iguazu falls in the
three-country-corner of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Half a year had
already been spent just for Chile and Argentina at that point, I had to
pick up the pace to get to Mexico in time to catch my flight.

Two weeks for friendly people and terere in Paraguay and then I
attempted the probably craziest hitchhiking odyssee of my life: North
from Asuncion, stopping at the German-speaking Mennonites in the heart
of the Chaco, and then trying to get to Bolivia. This is a story I will
still tell my grandchildren, how I got stuck, and I mean really stuck in
front of the ranch of German 300-million-dollar refugee Wolfgang Weber
and he invited me in and treated me very kindly!! And then I even made
it to Bolivia!

Tropical Santa Cruz with a close look at the carriers of deadly Chagas
disease. In Cochabamba I got stuck during census day, before making it
to the most fascinating city of this voyage: La Paz. Met Julia, a
wonderful Colombian woman. Spent five weeks in and around La Paz with
her, visiting the highest town in the world, Potosí, and being rescued
out of one of it's infamous mines, taking the famous
Uyuni-and-Southwest-Tour every backpacker probably once does in his
lifetime, hiking the Taquesi Trek in one strenous 16-hour-day across a
4700 meter pass, chewing coca and dried llama, bathing in Lake Titicaca
and many other things in this unbelievable country called Bolivia.

It was also here that the news of the terrorist attacks in the United
States reached me, a day most of us will never forget...

Next was Peru where of course I had to marvel at Machu Picchu. It is
worth the hype. A mining town, earthquake-struck Arequipa, the world's
deepest canyon watching awe-inspiring Condors, the mysterious lines of
Nazca and huge sand dunes were stops on the way to Lima. The place I
liked most in Peru was Huaraz/Caraz, in a valley with unbelievable
scenery where one of the world's worst natural disasters took place:
70,000 people died in an earthquake in 1970. And I had never even heard
of it.
Through the desert north scrambling around archeological sites and then
a highlight of the voyage - a lone night on an Andean pass watching the
Leonid's meteor shower: the night the stars fell from the sky.

Ecuador - time started ticking down. I got stuck on yet another census
day in Baños, spent some time in Cuenca and Quito before flying on to
Bogotá. I had tried the typical Ecuadorian dish, guinea pig, already in
Peru...

I had decided not to travel around Colombia, although this is one of my
dream destinations. At the moment too hot though, I will either risk my
life some other time or go back whenever it is safer. I spent four great
days in Bogotá and then hopped on the plane to fly on to Panamá, which
surprised me - Panama City is much more interesting than many travelers
had told me before.
In Costa Rica luck left me and my batteries started going on empty. A
sad personal story and even more annoying: I lost my passport. Still, I
had a good time with Jessica's family in San José and an interesting
Christmas on the beach.

A lot of volcanoes and great hitchhiking in the weeks after that in
Central America. But getting my replacement passport stolen in Nicaragua
added to my travel fatigue - I was starting to really look forward to
going home. New Year's Eve in Managua on a scrap metal yard in a poor
neighbourhood with sad prostitutes was something that also falls into
the category of interesting rather than wonderful.

I tried to dive in Honduras, was protected by an entire unit of special
forces in El Salvador, got to know about the scandal involving the most
prominent politician, former dictator and mass-murderer of Guatemala
days before the news broke on the national newspaper, saw the full moon
rise at Tikal and was threatened to have "the irons put on me" by a
border guard in Belize, but those are all stories I haven't even told on
the list.
When I crossed into Mexico I had only ten days left in my voyage, and
just a few hours to make it in time to Cancun, where Dan, my AFS-host
dad, best friend and brother from North Carolina would land. We had made
plans for months, and it was great that it worked out. We spent a
relaxed week in this U.S. enclave in Mexico (it was the cheapest place
for him to fly to), Isla Mujeres, Chichen Itza and Tulum. Then he flew
back and I had to hurry to start the last hitchhiking odysee of this
year right at the airport: getting to Mexico City on time for my flight
four days later. I made it, and even had time to see the second carneval
of this voyage, this time Mexico's most famous in Veracruz.
In Mexico City they were flying German flags, first I thought that they
wanted to wish me welcome and farewell, but then I realized that our
useless chancelor Schroeder was in town as well, coming to take me
home...
I landed in Germany on February 14, exactly one year after I had left.
Amazing feelings when I got home. It was as if I had never been gone, at
the same time I had lived 5 or 10 years worth of life in one year, and
have definitely been changed by this wonderful yet hard experience.
Readjusting was difficult, I am not sure if I really did or ever will. I
know that I love Germany and love getting back to Germany every time
more. Still, when I listen to music I brought home (Bacilos: Tabaco y
Chanel, for example) and imagine myself standing somewhere in the Latin
American loneliness, watched by some bird flying high above, my heart
becomes heavy and tears roll from my eyes. I still have not seen enough,
this is a voyage that will never end...
4. Work and Studies
From the road in Latin America I had kept in touch with a cool manager
of Volkswagen. Back in Germany we arranged everything, and it worked out
- I could write my thesis at a dream destination: Volkswagen's awesome
new Transparent Factory in Dresden (http://www.glaesernemanufaktur.de).
It had been inaugurated in November and is now producing VW's new top
end model, the Phaeton, and all this with a totally new concept of
customer integration and transparency. It was great, I could live with
my grandparents in Radebeul, 20 minutes from the city center of Dresden
and work in the most modern and at the moment most fascinating factory
of this planet.
We only get three months to write the thesis from our university, WHU
(http://www.whu.edu), and I used my time and sent in the finished thesis
on deadline day Monday, July 15. This was the end of my career as a
student, if the professor likes my work, I'll have graduated with a
degree in Business Administration and Economics. Free at last, after
3-and-a-half year of studies excluding the year in Latin America. Cool!!

Now I am available for the job market, or maybe not yet, since I decided
to postpone this a bit and start bringing-people-together.net. Once I
have been successful there, it will be time to do the recruiting
routine. Also, I will keep my eyes and ears open, if you get to know of
some international, interesting and well paid job in the business world
during the next year, just drop me a line...;-)
5. Family
Some news from my brothers and my sister. Kjell is still studying
psychology and anthropolgy in Mainz near Frankfurt, while spending most
of his energy in countless activities like AFS, ecology and the
Hospitality Club. He went back to his AFS country Indonesia on Saturday
for a few weeks. Kay spent most of the time after his graduation from
High School in 2000 taking care of Luana, his daughter. Luana is an
amazing girl, intelligent, cute, talking. Then, on April 23, his second
child was born - Mio joined our family. Kay now wants to either study
psychology or business starting this fall or become a pilot. Constanze
finished high school a few weeks back and will now spend a year or so
working and traveling, going back to her AFS country Argentina. And last
but not least, Till left for Brazil and a hopefully life changing
AFS-year just a few days back. Looking forward to the day all five of us
will be united again.

Liebe Freunde,
anderthalb Jahre sind vergangen, seit ich die letzte grosse email
rausgeschickt habe. Ich bin in einem Jahr von Argentinien bis Mexiko
getrampt, hab meine Diplomarbeit in der Glaesernen Manufaktur in Dresden
geschrieben und stehe nun am Beginn eines Riesen-Projekts, das mich
vielleicht drei Jahre lang um die Welt treiben wird...
Wenn Du Dich fragst, warum Du diese mail ueberhaupt bekommst - Du bist
irgendwie in mein Adressbuch geraten und so alle 6 Monate schicke ich
eine laaaaange email raus, in der ich erzaehle, was ich gerade so
treibe. So kannst Du ab und zu was von mir hoeren, auch wenn wir keinen
regen email-Kontakt halten. Wenn Du noch regelmaessiger ein

Vorrede, hier sind meine news:
1. Neues Projekt: bringing-people-together.net
Vor zwei Wochen hab ich das wohl groesste Projekt meines Lebens
gestartet. Ich werde um die Welt trampen und erst aufhoeren, wenn ich
eine Million Mitglieder fuer den Hospitality Club gefunden habe. Ich
werde viele verschiedene Aktionen ausprobieren - zu Radios, Fernsehen,
Zeitungen gehen, mit Bürgermeistern, Ministern, Menschen auf der Strasse
und in Kneipen reden. Ich will soviele Menschen wie moeglich von der
wunderbaren Idee des Hospitality Exchange begeistern - dass man
tatsaechlich seinen Horizont erweitern und etwas fuer mehr
interkulturelles Verstaendnis tun kann, indem man Menschen, die in die
eigene Stadt/ins eigene Land kommen, trifft und ihnen hilft. Und
natuerlich Spass haben kann dabei...:-)
Ich werde mir konkrete Ziele fuer jeden Ort setzen, z.B. Dresden nicht
verlassen, bis ich nicht 10 Leute hier gefunden habe (inzwischen
geschafft), Sachsen nicht bis 100 Mitglieder im Club sind, und
Deutschland nicht bis 1000 Deutsche im Club sind. Ich hoffe, dass ich in
Europa recht schnell 10.000 Leute finden werde, dann 100.000 weltweit in
einem Jahr und 1.000.000 in drei Jahren. Da liegt noch ein langer Weg
vor mir und ich brauche eine Menge Hilfe! Wenn Du Leute kennst, die gern
andere Menschen kennenlernen oder gern reisen, dann leite ihnen diese
email bitte einfach weiter oder schreib ihnen ein paar Zeilen ueber den
Club.
Waehrend der Reise werde ich Geschichten ueber interessante Menschen,
Orte und Organisationen schreiben, allerding auf Englisch. Es gibt zwei
Verteiler: einen fuer regelmaessige kurze Nachrichten von unterwegs,

dabei. Die andere Liste hab ich auch schon waehrend meines Jahres in

Das Projekt hat in Dresden gut begonnen - ich war den ganzen Tag in den
Top News von Radio Energy am Start-Montag (auch wenn das sicher nicht
die Top-Zielgruppe ist...:-), ein Artikel war schon in den Dresdner
Neuesten Nachrichten, andere sollen in Saechsischer Zeitung und Bild
folgen und am Freitag kam ein genialer Beitrag im Sachsenspiegel des
MDR, fuer den wir letzte Woche 4 Stunden hier in Radebeul und in Dresden
gefilmt haben. Eine Menge Leute haben sich schon registriert, aber ich
brauche viel, viel Hilfe, um die Million zu erreichen. Darum nochmal die
Bitte - schicke Deinen Freunden einfach ne kurze Nachricht, pack nen
Link in Deine Signatur (den Text am Ende jeder email) oder leite diese
email einfach weiter - jedes neue Mitglied zaehlt!
Wohin werde ich reisen? Ich weiss es noch nicht genau. Erstmal will ich
den genialen europaeischen Sommer nutzen und hier durch die Lande
ziehen. Ich moechte viele Freunde besuchen, die ich lange nicht gesehen
habe, aber auch Leute und Clubmitglieder, die mich ueber die Website
einladen. Wenn ich dann 10.000 Leute in Europa gefunden habe, werde ich
andere Reisen planen - ich traeume schon lange davon, ueber Land nach
Asien zu reisen. Vielleicht auch etwas Zeit im Nahen Osten verbringen
und Arabisch lernen, vielleicht eine lange Tramp-Expedition in den USA
und Kanada oder vielleicht durch Afrika reisen - es gibt soviele
reizvolle Reiseziele. Alles haengt vom Erfolg des Projekts ab - ich hab
etwas Geld waehrend des Studiums gespart, aber es waere natuerlich
super, wenn ich Sponsoren finden koennte, die mir helfen, solange
weiterzumachen, bis ich diesen Traum verwirklicht habe - ein weltweites
Netzwerk netter Menschen zu bauen.

Menschen zusammenbringen, ein weltweites Netzwerk netter Menschen bauen?
Wenn Du Dich fragst, was dieser Hospitality Club eigentlich ist, dann
kommt jetzt die Erklaerung...
Du registrierst Dich und gibst an, wie Du jemandem helfen koenntest, der
in Dein Land oder in Deine Stadt kommt. Mit einer Tour durch die Stadt,
einer Einladung zum Essen oder auch einem Schlafplatz fuere eine Nacht
oder zwei. Wenn Du Mitglied des Clubs bist, was natuerlich kostenlos
ist, kannst Du Dich mit Deinem Benutzernamen und Passwort einloggen und
die Profile der anderen Mitglieder ansehen. Vor Deiner naechsten Reise
kannst Du dann einfach die Mitglieder an Deinem Zielort kontaktieren,
und vielleicht hast Du schon einen Freund am anderen Ende der Welt,
bevor Du ankommst.
Die Idee ist bisher sehr gut aufgenommen worden, es gibt jetzt 1400

Als ich im Februar 2001 die letzte dieser langen mails in den Rechner
tippte war ich dabei, mich auf meinen Abflug nach Buenos Aires,
Argentinien vorzubereiten. Wenn Du meine Reise auf der

weisst Du in etwa, was inzwischen passiert ist, wenn nicht, dann folgt
jetzt der Versuch einer (kurzen?) Zusammenfassung eines epischen Jahres
das man eigentlich nicht zusammenfassen kann...:
Schon im Flugzeug traf ich die Gruppe der AFSer, die ihr Austauschjahr
in Argentinien antreten sollten. In Buenos Aires gelandet, bin ich so
direkt ins Camp mitgefahren - als Freiwilliger fuer AFS Argentinien.
Nach einer Woche in Buenos Aires, waehrend der ich unter anderem
Maradona bei einem Boca-Spiel sah, und einem Abstecher zu Argentiniens
beruehmtesten Karneval in Gualeguaychu verbrachte ich ein paar Tage in
Uruguay. Ich besuchte Rossina, eine gute Freundin meines Bruders Kay,
die mit AFS in Herzberg gewesen war. Nun ist sie mit
Fussball-Nationalspieler Gonzalo Sorondo verheiratet, der bei der WM in
Japan/Suedkorea richtig gut gespielt hat.

Zurueck in Buenos Aires hatte ich meine erste Einladung ins Radio zum
Thema Hospitality Club, spannend. Eine Menge Artikel und Interviews
folgten in den naechsten Monaten, auch darum gibt es jetzt in
Lateinamerika schon eine ganze Menge Mitglieder im Club. Und mir hat das
Spiel mit den Medien immer viel Spass gemacht.

Bis auf die Anden in Bolivien und Peru trampte ich waehrend des gesamten
Jahres. Ich kann jetzt zu allen Laendern was erzaehlen, zu den
Unterschieden zwischen Argentinien (verdammt hart) und Chile (genial!)
z.B., und natuerlich viele, viele unglaubliche Geschichten - einige
kannst Du auf der Liste nachlesen...
Ein weiterer wichtiger Bestandteil der Reise waren die vielen, vielen
AFS-Freunde und -Freiwilligen die ich besucht habe, unmoeglich alle in
dieser email zu erwaehnen. Es war erstaunlich zu sehen, welch grosses
Netzwerk wir in unserer Familie in den 8 Jahren aufgebaut haben, seit
ich zu meinem Austauschjahr in die USA aufbrach. Viele wunderbare
Menschen in einer wunderbaren Organisation. In einigen Gegenden, in
denen ich niemand kannte, wie z.B. im Sueden Argentiniens und in
Nicaragua benutzte ich oft mein Zelt und in Bolivien und Guatemala stieg
ich auch ein paarmal in Hostels ab.
Auf dem Weg in den Sueden Argentiniens war die beeindruckendste Station
die Farm von El Cuba in der Naehe von El Bolson. Er wanderte nach
Tschernobyl aus Deutschland aus und lebt jetzt mit seiner Frau und
Toechtern von drei Kuehen und seiner Haende Arbeit. Ich landete dort
nur, weil ich den Bruder seiner "rechten Hand" in Marokko getroffen
hatte, und dieser mir eine Karte gezeichnet hatte, mit deren Hilfe ich
die Farm finden konnte. Aber jetzt solltest Du wirklich die Geschichte

Ich sah wunderschoene Nationalparks, Orkas und einen irren Gletscher,
doch dann warf mich ein schlimmer Unfall aus der gluecklichen
Reise-Bahn. Wir verunglueckten auf einer Schotterstrasse mitten in der
Weite Patagoniens, mein Rucksack flog 50 Meter durch ein Fenster und nur
der Anschnallgurt rettete mir das Leben. Ich brach mir nur den Arm und
nachdem ich nach ein paar Stunden das 140 Kilometer entfernte
Krankenhaus erreicht hatte, setzte ich meine Reise mit einem Gipsarm
fort...

Die suedlichste Stadt der Welt, Ushuaia auf Feuerland, war der Punkt an
dem ich mich wieder gen Norden orientierte und den Rest des Jahres in
diese Richtung reiste. Ab nach Chile und auf den wahnsinnig schoenen
Camino Austral. Dort feierte ich meinen 23. Geburtstag an einem
haengenden Gletscher, mit dem Amuesieren ueber 2 Japaner, die sich dort
im Nirgendwo trafen, mit einer Nacht auf einem Kuh-Markt, wo ich mit
einem Amerikaner steckenblieb und mit dem Besuch im Haus eines
Pinochet-Fans. Am naechsten Tag wurden wir dann von Israelis gerettet...

Ich trampte die gesamte Laenge Chiles und besuchte dabei soviele
wunderbare AFS-Freunde, dass sich mein Herz zusammenzieht wenn ich nur
an sie denke. Ich habe mich in Chiles Landschaften und seine Menschen
verliebt - DAS Land, in das ich auf jeden Fall eines Tages zurueckkehren
werde. Unterwegs sammelte ich Maria, eine suesse schwedische Aerztin
auf, und wir reisten 6 Wochen zusammen, bevor sie wieder nach Hause
zurueckfliegen musste. Soviele Erinnerungen an Chile - 5 Kinder auf
Chiloe, Entspannung in Temuco, los Rodriguez in Santiago, von der
Existenz von UFOs ueberzeugt, Trampen durch die Wueste mit Maria, Campen
in Geisterstaedten, ein kleines Erdbeben. Drei Monate waren nicht genug!

Zurueck nach Argentinien um den Norden zu sehen, ein Besuch bei der
AFS-Gastfamilie meines Schwesterherzes Constanze und eine sehr harte
Tramp-Exkursion nach Bolivien. Dann durch den Chaco nach
Resistencia/Corrientes und nach einem kleinen Ausflug nach Rosario
weiter zu den grossartigen Iguazu-Wasserfaellen im Drei-Laender-Eck
Argentinien/Brasilien/Paraguay. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte ich bereits
ein halbes Jahr allein in Chile und Argentinien verbracht - ich musste
mich etwas mehr sputen, um Mexiko und meinen Rueckflug rechtzeitig zu
erreichen.

Zwei Wochen fuer nette Menschen und Terere in Paraguay und dann stuerzte
ich mich in das wohl verrueckteste Tramp-Abenteuer meines Lebens:
Richtung Norden von Asuncion in den Chaco, wo ich einen Zwischenstopp
bei den deutschsprachigen Mennoniten einlegte, und weiter um nach
Bolivien zu kommen. Diese Geschichte werde ich noch meinen Enkeln
erzaehlen - wie ich steckenblieb, aber wirklich steckenblieb, und dies
genau vor der Ranch des 300-Millionen-Dollar-Fluechtlings Wolfgang
Weber, Ex-Chef von Suedmilch, der mich einlud und sehr zuvorkommend
behandelte. Und dann schaffte ich es sogar bis Bolivien!

Das tropische Santa Cruz mit einem guten Einblick in das Leben der
Uebertraeger der toedlichen Chagas-Krankheit. In Cochabamba waehrend der
Volkszaehlung festgesetzt. Dann die faszinierendste Stadt dieser Reise:
La Paz. Traf Julia, eine wunderbare Kolumbianerin am ersten Tag. Fuenf
Wochen mit ihr in und um La Paz, ein Abstecher in die hoechstgelegene
Stadt der Welt, Potosí, und eine dramatische Rettungsaktion aus einer
der furchtbaren Minen dort, die beruehmte Uyuni-und-Suedwesten-Tour, die
wohl jeder Reisende einmal in seinem Leben mitmacht, ein unglaublich
harter 16-Stunden-Tag auf dem Taquesi Trek auf alten Inka-Wegen ueber
einen 4700-Meter-Pass, Coca- und Llama-Kauen, Baden im Titicaca-See und
viele andere Aktivitaeten in diesem unglaublichen Land mit dem Namen
Bolivien.

ein Tag, den die meisten von uns nie vergessen werden...

Es folgte Peru, wo ich natuerlich Machu Picchu bewundern musste - es
lohnt sich wirklich. Eine Minenstadt, das Erdbeben-geplagte Arequipa,
der tiefste Canyon der Welt mit Respekt einfloessenden Condoren, die
mysterioesen Linien von Nazca und riesige Sandduenen waren Stationen auf
dem Weg nach Lima. Der Ort, der es mir in Peru am meisten angetan hat
war Huaraz/Caraz, in einem Tal von unglaublicher Schoenheit in dem sich
eine der groessten Naturkatastrophen aller Zeiten abspielte - 70.000
Menschen verloren bei einem Erdbeben 1970 ihr Leben. Und ich hatte noch
nie davon gehoert.
Durch die Wuesten des Nordens mit vielen interessanten archaeologischen
Fundstaetten und dann ein Highlight dieser Reise - eine einsame Nacht
auf einem Andenpass waehrend der ich wie gebannt den
Leoniden-Meteoriten-Regen verfolgte - die Nacht in der die Sterne vom
Himmel fielen.

Ecuador - die Zeit begann rueckwaerts zu laufen. Ich erlebte die zweite
Volkszaehlung in Baños, verbrachte ein paar Tage in Cuenca und Quito,
und flog dann weiter nach Bogotá. DIE ecuadorianische Spezialitaet hatte
ich schon in Peru probiert - Meerschweinchen...

Ich hatte entschieden, nicht in Kolumbien herumzureisen, obwohl dieses
Land schon immer eines meiner Traumziele war. Im Moment einfach zu
gefaehrlich, ich werde entweder mein Leben irgendwann anders riskieren
oder zurueckkehren, wenn sich die Lage etwas beruhigt hat. Vier
grossartige Tage in Bogotá, dann ging es per Flugzeug weiter nach
Panamá, das mich ueberraschte - Panama Stadt ist viel interessanter als
viele Leute mir vorher erzaehlt hatten.
In Costa Rica verliess mich das Glueck und meine Batterien erreichten
ein kritisches Niveau. Eine traurige persoenliche Geschichte und noch
nerviger: ich verlor meinen Pass. Trotzdem verbrachte ich eine angenehme
Woche mit Jessicas Familie in San José und ein interessantes Weihnachten
am Strand.

Viele Vulkane und grossartiges Trampen in den folgenden Wochen in
Zentralamerika. Doch dann wurde mein Ersatzpass in Nicaragua gestohlen
und Reisemuedigkeit setzte ein - ich freute mich langsam wirklich auf
die Rueckkehr. Silvester auf einem Schrottplatz in einer armen Gegend
von Managua mit traurigen Prostituierten fiel auch eher in die
Kategorie "interessant" als "wunderbar".

Ich versuchte zu Tauchen in Honduras, wurde von einer ganzen Einheit
Spezialeinsatzkraefte in El Salvador beschuetzt, erfuhr von einem
Skandal um den bekanntesten Politiker, vorherigen Diktator und
Massenmoerder Guatemalas Tage bevor die Geschichte auf der Titelseite
der groessten Zeitung des Landes erschien, sah den Vollmond ueber Tikal
aufgehen und wurde mit dem Anlegen von Handschellen von einem
Grenzpolizisten in Belize bedroht, aber dies sind alles Geschichten, die
ich noch nicht einmal auf der Liste erzaehlt habe.
Als ich in Mexiko ankam hatte ich nur noch 10 Tage Reise uebrig, und nur
ein paar Stunden um rechtzeitig in Cancun anzukommen: Dan, mein
AFS-Gastvater, Bruder und bester Freund aus North Carolina landete dort.
Wir hatten seit Monaten eine gemeinsame Woche geplant, und kaum selbst
daran geglaubt, dass es klappen wuerde. Wir verbrachten etwas Zeit in
dieser amerikanischen Enklave in Mexiko (Cancun war das billigste
Flugziel fuer ihn), auf Isla Mujeres, bei den Ruinen von Chichen Itza
und Tulum. Dann flog er zurueck und ich musste mich beeilen. Ich trat
meine letzte Tramp-Odyssee noch vom Flughafen in Cancun an, um
rechtzeitig fuer meinen Flug vier Tage spaeter in Mexiko City
einzutreffen. Ich schaffte es und hatte sogar noch Zeit, den zweiten
Karneval dieser Reise mitzunehmen, diesmal Mexikos beruehmtester in
Veracruz.
In Mexiko City begruessten mich ueberall deutsche Fahnen, erst dachte
ich sie wollten mich willkommen heissen und verabschieden, doch dann
begriff ich, dass unser nichtsnutziger Kanzler auch in der Stadt war,
gekommen um mich nach Hause zu holen...
Am 14. Februar landete ich in Deutschland, genau ein Jahr nachdem ich
aufgebrochen war. Seltsame Gefuehle, als ich zu Hause ankam. Es war, als
waere ich nie weggewesen, aber gleichzeitig hatte ich 5 oder 10 Jahre
Leben in einem Jahr gelebt und bin von dieser wunderbaren aber harten
Erfahrung sicher veraendert worden. Mich wieder einzuleben war schwer,
ich weiss nicht, ob ich es wirklich geschafft habe, oder ob ich es
jemals schaffen werde. Ich weiss, das ich Deutschland liebe und dass ich
jede Rueckkehr mehr geniesse. Trotzdem, wenn ich jetzt die Musik hoere,
die ich mit nach Hause gebracht habe (z.B. Bacilos: Tabaco y Chanel) und
mir vorstelle, wie ich irgendwo in der lateinamerikanischen Weite stehe,
beobachtet von einem Vogel der hoch oben vorueberfliegt, dann wird mein
Herz schwer und Traenen rinnen aus meinen Augen. Ich habe immernoch
nicht genug gesehen, dies ist eine Reise, die nie enden wird...
4. Arbeit und Studium
Von unterwegs hatte ich Kontakt zu einem netten Volkswagen-Manager
gehalten. Zurueck in Deutschland arrangierten wir alles, und es klappte
tatsaechlich - ich konnte meine Diplomarbeit an einem Traum-Arbeitsplatz
schreiben: VWs genialer neuer Glaesernen Manufaktur in Dresden
(http://www.glaesernemanufaktur.de). Sie war im November eroeffnet
worden und produziert nun VWs neues Luxus-Modell, den Phaeton. Und alles
mit einem voellig neuen Konzept fuer Kundenintegration und Transparenz.
Es war grossartig, ich konnte bei meinen Grosseltern in Radebeul wohnen,
20 Minuten vom Zentrum Dresdens entfernt, und in der modernsten und im
Moment faszinierendsten Fabrik der Welt schreiben.
Wir haben an der WHU (http://www.whu.edu) nur einen Zeitrahmen von drei
Monaten fuer die Diplomarbeit, ich nutzte ihn bis zum letzten Tag und
schickte sie am Montag, dem 15. Juli ab. Wenn meinem Professor die
Arbeit gefaellt, habe ich damit mein Studium abgeschlossen,
Diplom-Kaufmann...endlich frei, nach 3-einhalb Jahren ohne das Jahr in
Lateinamerika. Cool!! :-)
Jetzt stehe ich also dem Arbeitsmarkt zur Verfuegung, naja, eher noch
nicht, da ich ja beschlossen habe, dies etwas zu verschieben und das
bringing-people-together.net-Projekt zu starten. Wenn ich damit
erfolgreich war, werde ich den Bewerbungs-Marathon starten. Aber
inzwischen werde ich meine Augen und Ohren offenhalten, und wenn Du im
naechsten Jahr von einem internationalen, interessanten und gutbezahlten
Job in der Wirtschaftswelt hoerst, dann schick mal ne mail...;-)
5. Familie
Ein paar Neuigkeiten von meinen Bruedern und meiner Schwester. Kjell
studiert weiterhin Psychologie und Anthropologie in Mainz, investiert
aber den Grossteil seiner Energie in unzaehlbare Aktivitaeten beim AFS,
in der Umweltbewegung und auch beim Hospitality Club. Er ist gerade fuer
ein paar Wochen in sein AFS-Land Indonesien geflogen. Kay hat ja die
meiste Zeit nach dem Abi 2000 mit der Betreuung seiner Tochter Luana
verbracht. Luana ist ein grossartiges Kind, intelligent, suess,
sprachbegabt. Am 23. April wurde Kays zweites Kind geboren - Mio stiess
zur Familie. Kay will ab Herbst entweder Psychologie oder
Wirtschaftswissenschaften studieren, oder eine Ausbildung zum Pilot
machen. Constanze hat vor ein paar Wochen ihr Abi bestanden und wird
jetzt ein Jahr reisend und arbeitend verbringen, unter anderem in ihr
AFS-Land Argentinien zurueckkehren. Und Till, tja, Till ist weg. Vor ein
paar Tagen nach Brasilien entflogen. Sein AFS-Jahr wird hoffentlich
genauso eine praegende Erfahrung wie fuer uns vier vor ihm. Ich freue
mich auf den Tag, an dem wir wieder alle fuenf zusammen sein werden.

vamos a ver si puedo escribir algunas de las cositas en Español, me
tienen que disculpar todas las faltas ortograficas y gramaticas -
apprendi esta idioma bonita en la calle y en fiestas y no con
libros...:-)
Hace un año y medio que mandé uno de estos mensajes grandes - estuve un
año viajando a dedo desde Argentina a Mexico, escribi mi tesis en
Dresden y ahora empeze un proyecto enorme que me va mandar por todo el
mundo durante al mejor tres años...
Estas recibiendo este mensaje, por que tu direccion de email esta en mi
libro de direcciones. Cada seis meses o por alli mando un mensaje
laaaaargo a toda la gente que conozco para contar un poco de las cosas
que estan pasando en mi vida. He hecho eso durante los seis años que
estoy en internet, y es una forma buenissima de dejar gente con cuales
no estoy en contacto diario saber que estoy vivo y haciendo locuras cada

1. Mi Proyecto Nuevo: bringing-people-together.net
Hace dos semanas empeze el proyecto mas grande de mi vida. Voy a viajar
a dedo por el mundo y no parar hasta que no he encontrado un million de
miembros para el Club de la Hospitalidad. Voy a hacer muchas cosas
differentes - ir a radios, TV, periodicos, hablar con alcaldes,
gobernadores, ministerios, gente en bares y en la calle. Quiero fascinar
tanta gente como posible con la idea maravillosa de intercambiar
hospitalidad - que encontrando y ayudando otras personas que vienen a tu
ciudad/pais puedes hacer algo para mas entendimiento intercultural y
aparte divertirte por supuesto...:-)
Voy a proponerme objectivos especificos en cada lugar que voy, por
ejemplo no voy a salir de Dresden hasta que no hay 10 miembros aca (ya
cumpli eso), no salir de mi estado de Saxonia hasta que no hay 100 y
Alemania hasta que no hay 1,000 miembros. Espero de encontrar 10,000
miembros en Europa bastante rapido, 100,000 en todo el mundo en un año y
1,000,000 en tres años. Mucho camino que hacer - necesito un monton de
ayuda. Si conoces gente interesados en viajar y encontrar gente de otras
culturas, por favor enviales este mensaje o escribeles algo sobre el
club.
Durante el viaje voy a escribir historias sobre gente, lugares y
organisaciones interesantes. Hay dos listas - una para mensajes cortas

El proyecto empezo muy bien aca en Dresden - estuve en las noticias de
una radio todo el primer dia, lunes Julio 15, un par de periodicos
publicaron algo y habia un reportaje maravilloso en la tele, por cual
filmamos 4 horas la semana pasada aca en la casa de mis abuelos y en
Dresden. Mucha gente ya se han registrado, pero necesito mucho, mucho
ayuda para llegar a mi fin de un million. Entonces otra vez - por favor
manda un mensaje corto a tus amigos, pon un enlace al fin de todos tus
emails o manda este mensaje a otra gente - cada miembro cuenta!!
Donde voy a viajar? Todavia no lo se. Primero, quiero usar el verano
maravilloso de Europa y viajar en este continente buenissimo. Quiero
visitar muchos amigos que no he visto en mucho tiempo, y tambien visitar
gente que me invitan por la pagina y miembros del club. Cuando he
encontrado 10,000 miembros en Europa probablemente voy a planear otros
viajes - me encantaria viajar por tierra a Asia, pasar un poco de tiempo
en el Medio Oriente y aprender Arabe, al mejor hacer una expedicion de
viajar a dedo a los EEUU y a Canada, y un viaje por Africa. Todo depende
del exito del proyecto - he ahorrado un poco de dinero durante mis
estudios, pero seria buenissimo encontrar algunos sponsores que me
ayudan a continuar hasta que he cumplido mi sueño de construir una red
mundial de de gente amable.

Tanto texto sobre acercando a la gente, construyendo una red mundial de
gente amable - si estas preguntandote, que es este Club de la
Hospitalidad, pues leelo aqui...
Te registras y dices como puedes ayudar alguien que viene a tu ciudad o
pais. Con una cena, un tour por la ciudad o un lugar para dormir una
noche o dos, lo que sea. Cuando eres miembro del club (cual es gratis,
por supuesto) recibes tu nombre usuario y tu contraseña con cual puedes
entrar al sitio y mirar los perfiles de los otros miembros. Cuando vas a
tu proximo viaje, puedes mirar en el sitio si hay miembros en el lugar
que vas, contactarles y al mejor ya tienes amigos al otro lado del
mundo.
La idea ha sido recibido muy bien - ahora hay mas de 1400 miembros en 84
paises. Con el proyecto de bringing-people-together.net quiero hacer
algo que ninguna otra organisacion de intercambio de hospitalidad he
hecho en el pasado: hacer la idea de intercambiar hospitalidad sabido
por todo el mundo y una opcion real para los viajes de mucha gente que
normalmente simplemente se quedaron en un hotel y seguiraron su libro de
viaje por la ciudad. El Club de la Hospitalidad esta organizado con
voluntarios - nuestra meta es de acercar a la gente y con eso hacer algo
para mas entendimiento intercultural.

3. Un año en Latinoamerica http://group.veitkuehne.de
Cuando mande el ultimo de estos mensajes largos en Febrero 2001 estaba
preparandome para mi vuelo a Buenos Aires. Si has seguido mi viaje en la
lista de historias del viaje (http://group.veitkuehne.de) ya sabes mas o
menos que paso hasta ahora, si no, pues aqui voy a tratar de escribir
sobre un año epico en algunas lineas...:
Ya en el avion me encontre con el grupo de AFSers que estaban al
principio de su año de intercambio en Argentina. Entonces, una vez
llegado a Buenos Aires me fue directamente a su orientacion como
voluntario de AFS Argentina. Una semana en Buenos Aires donde vi a
Maradona en un partido de Boca y despues una parada en el carneval mas
famoso del pais en Gualeguaychu. Despues a Uruguay, donde visite a
Rossina, ella es una muy buena amiga de mi hermano Kay y ahora casada
con jugador nacional de futbol de Uruguay Gonzalo Sorondo, quien jugo
muy bien en la copa en Japon/Korea del Sur.

De vuelta en Buenos Aires estuve en la radio la primera vez
promocionando el Club de la Hospitalidad, muy divertido. Habia muchos
mas articulos y entrevistas en los meses despues, y tambien por eso ya
hay bastante latinos en el club. Y fue diversion para mi.

Viaje a dedo durante todo el año, con excepcion de los Andes de Bolivia
y Peru donde eso no fue posible. Puedo contar mucho de los paises ahora,
las diferencias entre Argentina (muy dificil) y Chile (chevere!),
muchas, muchas historias increibles, puedes leer algunas en la lista...
Tambien fue a visitar muchissimos amigos y voluntarios de AFS durante
este año y no puedo mencionar todos aca. Fue impresionante ver la red de
contactos que tenemos en mi familia solamente 8 años despues que me fue
de intercambio a los EEUU. Mucha gente maravillosa en una organisacion
maravillosa. En algunas partes donde no tenia ningun contacto como en el
Sur de Argentina y en Nicaragua tambien use mi carpa/tienda de campaña y
en Bolivia y Guatemala dormi en algunos hostales.
Viajando hacia el Sur en Argentina la parada mas interesante fue en la
granja de El Cuba en El Bolson. El Cuba es un Aleman que salio de
nuestra patria despues de Chernobyl y ahora vive con su esposa, niñas y
tres vacas. Solamente llegue alli, por que habia encontrado el hermano
de su "mano derecha" en Maruecos, quien me habia dado un mapa con cual
podia llegar a la granja, pero ahora de verdad tendrias que leer la
historia...

Vi parques nacionales hermosos, orcas y un glaciar impresionante, hasta
que un accidente terible me desperte de mi vida feliz de viajero.
Volcamos en una ruta de ripio en el medio de la Patagonia, mi mochila
volo 50 metros y el cinturon me salvo la vida. Solamente me quebre el
brazo y despues de llegar al hospital que estuve a 140 kilometros segui
mi viaje con un jeso bonito...

Llegue a la ciudad mas Sureña del mundo, Ushuaia en Tierra del Fuego y
alli me di vuelta y viaje hacia el Norte durante el resto de año. Entre
a Chile y al Camino Austral maravillosissimo, alli celebre me cumpleaños
23 en un glaciar colgante, mirando dos Japoneses encontrandose en la
mitad de la nada, durmiendo una noche en un mercado de vacas con un
gringo que habia encontrado haciendo dedo, preguntando por agua en la
casa de un afficionado de Pinochet y estando rescateado por Israelis el
dia seguiente...

Despues viaje todo de Chile, visitando tantos amigos maravillosos de AFS
que mi corazon me duele solamente pensando en ellos. Me enamore de los
paysajes de Chile y de su gente - eso es el lugar donde seguramente voy
a volver algun dia. En el camino me encontre con Maria, una doctora
Sueca bonita y viajamos 6 semanas juntos, hasta que ella tenia que
volver a su pais. Tantas memorias de Chile - 5 niños en Chiloe,
relajando en Temuco, los Rodriguez en Santiago, empezando a creer en
OVNIs, haciendo dedo en el desierto con Maria, durmiendo en ciudades
fantasmas, sentiendo un pequeño temblor. Tres meses no fueron
suficientes.

Volvi a Argentina para ver el Norte, visitando la familia anfitriona de
mi hermana Constanze en Salta y haciendo una expedicion a dedo muy dura
a Bolivia. Despues cruzando el Chaco a Resistencia/Corrientes y despues
de una pequeña excursion a Rosario segui a las cataratas impresionantes
de Iguazu en la esquina de los tres paises Argentina, Brazil y Paraguay.
La mitad de mi año ya habia pasado solamente en Chile y Argentina, tenia
que darme un poco mas de prisa para llegar a Mexico en tiempo para mi
vuelo.

Dos semanas para gente amable y terere en Paraguay y despues empeze el
viaje a dedo mas loco de mi vida: hacia el Norte desde Asuncion, parando
con los Menonitos que hablan Aleman en el corazon del Chaco, y despues
tratando de llegar a Bolivia. Esta historia todavia voy a contar a mis
nietos, como me quede parado en el medio de la nada, pero al frente de
la finca del 300-million-dollar refugiado Aleman Wolfgang Weber, quien
me invito y me trato muy bien!! Y despues tambien llegue hasta Bolivia!

Santa Cruz, la ciudad tropical, visitando unos bichos teribles - las
vinchucas que transmitan la enfermedad mortal de Chagas. En Cochabamba
me quede parado para el dia del census nacional, y despues llegue a la
ciudad mas fascinante de este viaje: La Paz. Alli conoci a Julia el
primer dia, una Colombiana maravillosa. Pase cinco semanas con ella en
La Paz y los alrededores, visitando la ciudad mas alta del mundo,
Potosí, estando rescatado de una de sus minas teribles, haciendo el tour
famoso de Uyuni y el Suroueste, caminando el Taquesi Trek en un dia de
16 horas muy fatigoso pasando un paso de 4700 metros, masticando coca y
llama, bañando en el Lago Titicaca y muchas otras actividades en un país
increible llamado Bolivia.

El proximo pais fue Peru donde por supuesto tenia que visitar Machu
Picchu - merece toda la histeria. Una ciudad minera, terremoto-castigado
Arequipa, el cañon mas profundo del mundo con Condores impresionantes,
las lineas misteriosas de Nazca y dunas de arena altissimas fueron
paradas en el camino hacia Lima. El lugar que me encanto mas en Peru fue
Huaraz/Caraz, en un valle hermosissimo donde una de las catastrofes
naturales peores del mundo paso: 70,000 personas murieron en un
terremoto en 1970. Y yo ni si quiera habia escuchado de esto antes.
Pasando por los desiertos del Norte visitando muchos lugares
archaeologicos y despues una de las noches mejores del viaje - mirando
hacia el cielo en un paso de los Andes, durante la caida de meteoritas
de Leonid: la noche cuando las estrellas caieron del cielo.

Ecuador - ya no tenia mucho tiempo. Me quede parado para otro census
nacional en Baños y pase algunos dias en Cuenca y Quito. Ya habia
probado la comida tipica de Ecuador en Peru - cuy o chancho de indio...

Decidi de no viajar en Colombia, aunque este pais es uno de mis destinos
de sueños. Pero al momento demasiado peligroso, voy a volver algun dia
cuando las cosas estan mas tranquilas. Entonces solamente me fue en
avion desde Quito a Bogota, pase cuatro dias buenissimas alli y segui a
Panamá. Esta ciudad fue mucho mas interesante que muchos viajeros me
habian contado antes.
En Costa Rica se me acabo la suerte y mis baterias ya estaban casi
vacias. Una historia personal triste y todavia mas molesto: perdi mi
pasaporte. Pero tambien tenia una semana buena con la familia de Jessica
en San José y una navidad interesante en la playa.

Muchos vulcanos y diversion haciendo dedo en los semanas seguientes en
Centroamerica. Pero cuando me robaron mi nuevo pasaporte en Nicaragua,
ya estaba empezando a estar cansado de viajar de verdad - tenia ganas de
volver a casa. Año Nuevo en un lugar de chatarra en un barrio pobre de
Managua con prostitutas tristes tambien fue mas que nada interesante
pero no bonito.

Intente a bucear en Honduras, estuve protegido por una unidad entera de
fuerzas especiales en El Salvador, sabia de un escandalo del politico
mas famoso, ex-dictador y assessino de milles de gente de Guatemala
antes que todo salio en la primera pagina del diario mas grande del
pais, vi la luna llena salir en Tikal y estuvo amenazado de un policia
de fronteras de ponerme "bajo hierros" en Belize, pero eso son historias
que ni siquiera he contado en la lista.
Cuando cruce a Mexico solamente me quedaron diez dias de viaje, y
solamente unas horas para llegar a tiempo a Cancun, donde Dan, mi
AFS-padre anfitrion, mejor amigo y hermano desde Carolina del Norte iba
a aterizar. Habiamos hecho planes por meses y fue buenissimo que salio.
Pasamos una semana relajada en este enclave de los EEUU en Mexico (fue
el lugar mas barato para el para volar), Isla Mujeres, Chichen Itza y
Tulum. Despues el regreso y yo tenia que apurarme empezando el ultimo
odysee de viajar a dedo del viaje alli mismo en el aeropuerto: hacia
D.F. para llegar a tiempo para mi vuelo cuatro dias despues. Llegue, y
tambien tenia tiempo para un pequeño desvio viendo el segundo carneval
del año - esta vez el mas famoso de Mexico en Veracruz.
En D.F. habia banderas Alemanas por todas partes, primero pense que
querian saludarme, pero despues me di cuenta que nuestro chanciller
inutil estaba en la ciudad tambien, vino para tomarme a casa...
Aterize en Alemania el Febrero 14, exactamente un año despues de salir.
Sentimientos extraños cuando llegue a casa. Fue como nunca habia salido,
pero al mismo tiempo habia vivido 5 o 10 años de vida en un año, y
definitivamente he cambiado mucho por esta experienca maravillosa pero
dura. Reintegrarme fue dificil y no se si lo hice de verdad o si lo voy
hacer algun dia. Yo se que amo Alemania y cada vez que vuelvo lo amo
mas. Pero cuando ahora escucho la musica que traje del viaje
(Bacilos: Tabaco y Chanel, por ejemplo) y me imagino como estoy parado
en algun lugar en el medio de la nada en Latinoamerica, observado por
algun pajaro volando muy arriba, mi corazon se hace pesado y lagrimas
salen de mis ojos. Todavia no he visto suficiente, eso es un viaje que
nunca se acabe...
4. Trabajo y Estudios
Ya desde Latinoamerica habia mantenido contacto con un gerente chevere
de Volkswagen. De vuelta en Alemania hicimos todas las cosas necesarias
y me salio - podia escribir mi tesis en un destino de sueños: la nueva
maravillosa Manufactura Transparente de Volkswagen en Dresden
(http://www.glaesernemanufaktur.de). Fue inaugurado en Noviembre y ahora
esta fabricando el nuevo modelo de lujo de VW, el Phaeton, todo con un
concepto totalmente nuevo de integracion de clientes y de transparencia.
Fue muy bueno, podia vivir con mis abuelos en Radebeul, 20 minutes del
centro de Dresden y trabajar en la fabrica mas moderna y ahora mas
fascinante del planeta.
Nuesta universidad WHU (http://www.whu.edu) nos da solamente tres meses
para escribir la tesis, y yo use este tiempo hasta el ultimo dia Lunes,
Julio 15. Eso fue el final de mi carrera de estudiante, y si mi trabajo
le gusta a mi profesor soy licenciado de Administracion de Empresas y
Economia. Libre por fin despues de tres años y medio de estudios no
contando el año en Latinoamerica. Chevere!! :-)
Ahora estoy disponible al mercado de trabajo, o al mejor todavia no, por
que he decidido de empezar el proyecto de bringing-people-together.net.
Cuando he tenido exito alli voy a empezar con las entrevistas. Tambien
voy a tener mis ojos y orejas abiertos, si tu te das cuenta de alguna
posicion internacional, interesante y bien pagado en el mundo de
economia durante el año seguiente, mandame un correo...;-)
5. Familia
Algunas noticias de mis hermanos y mi hermana. Kjell sigue estudiando
psicologia y antropologia en Mainz cerca de Frankfurt. La mayoria de su
energia invierte en otras actividades innumerables como AFS, ecologia y
el Club de la Hospitalidad. Volvio a su pais de AFS Indonesia para
algunas semanas el sabado. Despues de su graduacion de colegio en 2000,
Kay estuvo la gran parte de su tiempo cuidando a su hija Luana. Ella es
una niña maravillosa, inteligente, preciosa, hablando mucho. El April
23, el segundo hijo de Kay nacio - Mio llego a la familia. Kay quiere
estudiar psicologia o administracion de empresas empezando este otoño o
empezar un entrenamiento para ser pilota. Constanze termino colegio
hace unas semanas y ahora quiere pasar un año trabajando y viajando,
tambien volviendo a su pais de AFS Argentina. Y finalmente Till salio
hace unos dias con destino Brazil - espero que su año de AFS va ser tan
importante y impresionante para el como para nosotros. Ya estoy
esperando el dia cuando los cinco vamos a estar reunidos.
6. Comentario Final
